DrChrono & Square Integrate to Enable Credit Card Payments

Using credit cards as a mode of payments has become increasingly prevalent, overcoming cash or check as a preferred method for paying across many industries. According to the Federal Reserve, total card payments grew from 103.5 billion with a value of $5.65 trillion in 2015 to 111.1 billion (6.8% increase) with a value of $5.98 trillion (5.5% increase) in 2016.

Payment processor TSYS also performed a survey of over 1200 consumers in late 2017. They found that 44% of consumers in their survey prefer to pay with a card. This was an 11% increase from their 2016 survey. Meanwhile, only 12% still prefer to pay with cash. Taking advantage of this shift is necessary for businesses everywhere, and it does not have to be overly complicated to implement.

Square is an advocate of businesses accepting credit card payments. They provide more than 2 million sellers with the ability to accept credit card payments whether they are mobile or in-store businesses.

This month we are excited to announce our new comprehensive Square integration that gives our providers an easy way to accept credit card payments from their patients. This integration enhances the practice management workflows already available in our electronic health record software.

With our new Square integration, providers are now able to easily process credit card payments right in the DrChrono EHR app anywhere, anytime. This will shorten transactions and make it an overall easier payment process. If you register in a medical related business category with Square, you can also accept HSA/FSA (no new cards needed). Implementing this tool into your practice can be a major boon for your revenue cycle process.

How Square Helps the Provider

With the new integration you are able to initiate a Square payment right from the appointment window. Input a charge with a custom note, and manually enter the credit card information or simply swipe, tap, or insert the credit card as you would for a transaction. Once the transaction is completed you will be taken back to the previous screen within DrChrono EHR.

Viewing and managing your Square transactions can all be done in the “Patient Payments” dashboard on web or mobile. You can identify Square payments by looking at the payment type, and by hovering over the question mark you can view additional information about the payments. The two way integration between DrChrono and Square automatically updates changes in one platform to show up in the other within 24 hours.

How Patients Can Use Square

Patients are also able to take advantage of the Square integration. DrChrono’s OnPatient Patient Portal app is useful for patient engagement, sharing health information with patients, and collecting payments. In OnPatient, patients can save their payment information and pay for bills online.

Providers can also request payments through the OnPatient app enabling patients to pay easily and fast. By offering easy and multiple ways for patients to pay, you can improve the patient payment experience as well as increase your payment collection amount. Therefore this tool will fit seamlessly into your medical billing process.

Please note, our integration has features that require users to be on the Prometheus plan or higher. Other users will be able to process payments but will not have visibility to manage the payments.
