Yes the iPad Mini is out. The drchrono team got our first batch to give to the team and all I have to say is wow. The form factor is amazing, it is amazingly light weight and feels as light as an iPhone or iPod touch. We have tested everything and made sure that everything is working. Everything about the iPad Mini is amazing, from the size, to the weight. One thing to note is that the iPad Mini does not come in retena display, so if your looking for the higher quilty visuals you might want to consider the larger iPad.

We’ve seen consumer gadgets being used by medical practitionersalready, but an iPad app called Drchrono is taking medicine to a new level of paper-free convenience. Drchronois an EHR (electronic health record) app for the iPad. It allows doctors to complete everyday tasks and access information without having to turn to paper records. The information gathered and accessed through the app is also available from any Web browser, iPhone or Android device, since the app syncs with the Drchrono Web-based health care platform.

The iPad 2 performance is faster that the iPad 1. Factors that make it faster are that the iPad 2 has more RAM and a faster processor. This speed difference can be seen in the Safari. It was an incredible experience to deliver the child in a safe, clean environment instead of imagining the child being born on a dirty ground with no help from medical professionals. My favorite moment from today was secretly plotting to dump ice cold water on the face of a patient with a heart rate of 177 beats per minute associated with dizziness.

We are very happy to hear that the next version of iOS version iOS 4.2 will have printing available to iPad users. This is powerful because sometimes healthcare professionals want the power to print out charts, print a bill, x-Rays and well you get the idea. Apple’s iOS 4.2 is set for release sometime in November, it will deliver a wireless printing system. Apple has released further details on their upcoming wireless printing feature and it’s being named AirPrint.

In August, Susannah Fox posted an essay on the potential for every patient to be an e-patient. Having observed some very serious e-patients at the World Parkinson Congress, a joint patient-professional meeting last week in Glasgow, Scotland, I think that Fox’s comment sells the true e-patients short. The divide we should erase is not between e-patient and patient but between e-patient and professional. Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, after Alzheimers.

In this specialty, successful, profitable software companies sell generally appreciated products that increase practice revenue and shorten their workdays. What’s the specialty? Radiology. I’ve worked with a couple of PACS (picture archive and communications systems) and RIS (radiology information systems) vendors and people selling associated products and seen their financials. These guys offer inter-operable systems that allow digital radiology systems (x-ray, CT, MRI, etc) installed in hospitals to share the images with radiologists working anywhere.
